If you’ve never had acupuncture before, walking into your first appointment can feel a little mysterious.
You might be wondering what the process looks like, whether it hurts, or how it’s different from a regular doctor’s visit.
As a student acupuncturist, I want you to know right from the start, this is a space for you to slow down, ask questions, and feel at ease.
Where It Happens
I’ll be seeing patients in the student clinic at the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (CCATCM) in Bedford, Nova Scotia, beginning in 2026.
It’s a supervised clinical environment, which means every treatment is overseen by a licensed practitioner who ensures your care is safe, effective, and tailored to your needs.
What the First Visit Looks Like
Your first appointment is all about getting to know you.
We’ll sit down together and talk through your main concerns, overall health, sleep, digestion, energy, and emotional well-being.
In TCM, everything is connected, so the more I understand your patterns, the better I can support you.
After the intake, I’ll look at your tongue and feel your pulse, two classic diagnostic tools that help identify what your body is communicating beneath the surface. From there, I’ll start forming your treatment plan.
Once I’ve completed your assessment, you’ll have a few minutes to get comfortable on the treatment table while I step out to consult with my clinic supervisor.
This brief discussion helps me refine and confirm the best approach for your specific needs, so you receive thoughtful, individualized care every time.
Afterward, I’ll return to begin your acupuncture treatment, using very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points to encourage circulation and regulate the body’s natural healing response. Most people find the experience deeply relaxing, some even fall asleep.
Supervision and Observation
Because this is a teaching clinic, there may be other students quietly observing your treatment. Observation is an important part of the learning process, and it’s always handled with respect and discretion. Your comfort and privacy come first, and you are always welcome to ask questions or express preferences.
How to Prepare
Eat a light meal before your session and wear loose, comfortable clothing.
You don’t need to bring anything special, just a willingness to rest and reconnect.
Try to keep your schedule light afterward so your body has space to integrate the treatment.
What It Feels Like
Acupuncture isn’t painful, but you may feel gentle sensations like warmth, tingling, heaviness, or release. These are signs that Qi is moving, your body waking up and adjusting.
Afterward, you might feel calm, clear-headed, or pleasantly tired.
It’s a good idea to hydrate and give yourself time to notice how your body responds over the next few days.
Why It’s Worth Trying
The student clinic is a wonderful way to experience Traditional Chinese Medicine in an affordable, safe, and supportive environment.
You get the full care of a future practitioner backed by experienced instructors, and I get to learn through real human connection, which is the best kind of education.
If you’d like to experience acupuncture for yourself, you can book with me at the CCATCM Student Clinic in Bedford, NS.
And if you’re in western New Brunswick, you can join my Carleton County clinic waitlist to be among the first to book when my full practice opens in 2026.
Whether it’s your first time trying acupuncture or your hundredth, I look forward to meeting you and helping you feel more balanced, one session at a time.
A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together. You can always find me over on Instagram to keep the conversation going.
