If you have ever wondered in the middle of a treatment,
“Is this normal…?”

Good news. It probably is.

Acupuncture is one of the few times women get to fully drop into their bodies, and when that happens, all kinds of sensations show up. Most of them are completely expected in TCM, even if they feel strange, surprising, or downright funny in the moment.

1. Falling asleep instantly

One minute you are chatting, the next you are snoring softly like a tiny woodland creature.
This is very normal. Acupuncture flips your nervous system into rest and reset mode quickly.

2. Twitching or little muscle jumps

Your body releases tension point by point.
It is not “losing control.”
It is Qi doing some long overdue housekeeping.

3. Feeling warm, heavy, floaty, or melty

Sometimes you feel like you are sinking into the table.
Sometimes you feel like you are hovering above it.
Both are normal as Qi redistributes through your system.

4. Emotional waves

Tears, giggles, sudden calm, or a sense of relief can all show up.
Your channels hold emotional patterns, and needling them often lets that energy move.

5. Sensations far away from the needle

A needle on your ankle, a sensation in your hip.
A needle on your hand, a sensation in your shoulder.
This is meridian theory in action and it is completely normal.

6. Gurgling stomach

This is one of the best signs of all.
Your digestion is waking up and saying, “We can work again.”
A chatty belly is the soundtrack of healing.

7. Feeling nothing at certain points

Also normal.
Not every point feels the same and sensitivity varies from person to person.
Feeling nothing does not mean nothing is happening.

8. Temperature shifts

A wave of warmth or a moment of chill is common.
Changes in circulation can feel like tiny internal weather changes.

9. Realizing how tense you were

There is always a moment where a woman sighs and says, “I did not realize how tight my shoulders were until now.”
That is your body finally letting go.

10. The post-treatment noodle feeling

You stand up and feel soft, relaxed, and slightly wobbly.
This is your nervous system restoring balance.

So yes, it is normal. All of it.

Acupuncture invites your system back into harmony, and harmony sometimes feels like movement, warmth, release, or deep rest. These experiences are familiar to acupuncturists everywhere. And here at Acupuncture New Brunswick, I often remind women:

Your body is talking.
Let it speak.
I will translate.

A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together.
