Your period has been carrying the emotional load of your entire body for years, and honestly, she deserves an award. She’s the friend who tells you when your foundation shade is off, or when your ex is absolutely not worth texting back, even if you “accidentally” typed the message already. She is not the villain. She’s the truth teller. The whistleblower. That one friend who loves you so damn much she isn’t afraid to hold up a mirror and force you to look into it… in physiological form.

And yet most of us were taught to treat her like an inconvenience. Hide her. Push through. Ignore her. Pretend she isn’t screaming information that could actually make your whole life easier.

Let’s fix that.

Because in Traditional Chinese Medicine, your cycle isn’t just “that thing you suffer through once a month,” it’s your monthly weather report. A whole body update delivered straight from your Blood, Qi, hormones, stress levels, sleep patterns, digestion, emotions, and yes, even your relationship with winter in New Brunswick.

She’s not dramatic. She’s detailed. And she’s trying to help.

When your flow changes, she’s waving a little flag

Light, heavy, stop-start, clots the size of blueberries (or bigger), spotting for days, breezing in and out like she forgot something in the truck… all of this is information. Not moral failure, not “you being difficult,” not the universe punishing you for skipping a salad.

TCM reads your flow the way an old farmer reads the sky. Slow? Maybe your Qi is tired. Heavy? Could be your Liver feeling cramped and cranky. Clots? Blood stagnation saying, “Hi babe, we’re stuck.” Spotting? Spleen Qi needs a snack and a nap.

In other words, your period is giving you the receipts.

Cramps are clues, not curses

You know that dull, dragging ache that feels like your uterus is tired of holding the emotional weight of your family’s group text? That’s a pattern.
The sharp, stabbing pain that radiates into your back on cold days? Also a pattern.
The cramps that show up exactly when you decided to finally prioritize yourself? Honey… your Liver has thoughts.

TCM doesn’t shrug and say “that’s just being a woman.” It asks why. It follows the thread. It looks for the root, whether that’s stress, cold, not enough warm food, too many cold smoothies, or the fact that life never pauses and your Spleen is doing the most.

PMS isn’t personality, it’s your Liver Qi trying to get through to you

We’ve all had that week where socks on the floor feel like a personal attack. Where you cry at the Irving commercial. Where your tolerance for nonsense evaporates and suddenly you’re ready to move to the woods forever.

This is not a character flaw.

It’s communication.

Your Liver is supposed to keep everything flowing. Emotions, Qi, patience. But when life gets tight, deadlines, errands, NB weather that feels like a dare, that flow gets stuck. PMS is the body’s version of a traffic jam. Not “you being too much,” but your system begging for movement, warmth, and ease.

Your period is the most honest part of your month

She doesn’t lie. She doesn’t sugarcoat. She doesn’t gaslight you.

She shows up with data.

And when you learn to read those signs, the timing, the color, the pain, the moods, the digestion shifts, the sleep changes, everything starts to make sense. You finally see that what you’ve been calling “normal” is actually “common,” and that common doesn’t mean fine.

TCM treats your cycle as a living, breathing conversation between you and your body. A relationship that thrives on warmth, regular meals, rest before midnight, and the occasional moment of peace that doesn’t involve hiding in your car.

You don’t have to suffer to be a woman

Your cycle isn’t a punishment.
Your cramps aren’t a destiny.
Your PMS isn’t your personality.

These are signals. And when you honor them, with food that actually nourishes you, with acupuncture that moves what’s stuck, with seasonal support, with boundaries, with warmth, with rest, things shift.

Your period softens.
Your cycle evens out.
Your body exhales.

And suddenly you realize she was never your enemy. She’s been trying to tell you the truth all along, in a language no one ever taught you how to read.

But you can learn. And your body will thank you in the most tangible, monthly way.

A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together.
