If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling at midnight, wondering whether acupuncture could help you feel even a little more like yourself again, you’re not alone. Women search these same questions with the same mix of curiosity, hope, and “please let this work because I’m tired of feeling tired.”
Here’s the honest, grounded version of the answers you’ve been craving.
1. “Does acupuncture actually work or am I just paying for a fancy nap?”
Short answer: it works. Longer answer: yes, you will probably nap. The needles signal your nervous system to shift gears, and your body finally gets to stop fighting fires for a minute.
2. “Will acupuncture hurt?”
I won’t lie to you, it can feel sharp when your acupuncture needles first go in, even though they are very fine. There may be sensations that signal the needle has reached the layer where the Qi is flowing but all sensation should settle quickly and if it doesn’t we can remove the needle. Some acupuncture points produce more sensation and others you won’t even feel the needle go in at all. The goal is comfort. If something feels sharp, we adjust.
3. “What do I even wear to acupuncture?”
You can wear anything you want to acupuncture but I recommend something comfy that will help you continue the relaxed vibes you are going to have after your treatment. In most cases, we only need access to your legs from the knee down and your arms elbows down. You are welcome to undress to your comfort level before getting cozy on the treatment table but if you prefer to remain as covered as possible, wear clothing that is loose enough to roll up over your knees and past your elbows.
4. “Can acupuncture help with anxiety?”
Absolutely. Anxiety shows up when your system is stuck in overdrive. Acupuncture helps you come back down to a human pace again, not a buzzing telephone pole.
5. “Can acupuncture help my period cramps or is my uterus just dramatic?”
Your uterus is not dramatic. She’s trying to tell you something. Acupuncture helps regulate blood flow, reduce stagnation, and ease those monthly “am I dying or is it hormones?” moments.
6. “How long until I notice a difference?”
Some women feel relief after the first session. Most need a handful of treatments for solid, lasting shifts. Healing is a rhythm, not a sprint.
7. “Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?”
Yes, with a trained practitioner. It can support nausea, sleep, hip pain, anxiety, and birth prep. TCM has supported pregnant women for centuries.
8. “Can acupuncture help me get pregnant or stay pregnant?”
It can support hormones, stress, ovulation, and cycle health. It’s not magic, but it definitely helps your body move toward balance.
9. “Will acupuncture help me sleep through the night… or at least stop waking up sweaty at 3 a.m.?”
Yes. Especially those perimenopause nights where you wake up feeling like the woodstove overheated and nobody cracked a window.
10. “What if I cry on the table?”
Then you cry. It’s normal. Acupuncture softens the places we’ve held tight for too long. You’re safe to be human here.
11. “Can acupuncture help migraines?”
Yes. Especially the weather-sensitive, hormone-fueled, “I know a storm is coming before Environment Canada does” migraines.
12. “Can acupuncture help digestion?”
Bloating, gas, constipation, loose stools… all of it. Your gut is a storyteller. Acupuncture helps it tell a clearer story.
13. “Is it normal to feel emotional after acupuncture?”
Totally. When your nervous system shifts out of survival mode, feelings bubble up. It’s part of healing, not a sign you’re “too much.”
14. “Can I get acupuncture if I have Botox or fillers?”
Yes. And cosmetic acupuncture can actually boost circulation and collagen, which makes everything look more natural and balanced.
15. “How many sessions do I actually need?”
Enough to create change, not so many you feel trapped. Most women start weekly for a bit, then taper as their system stabilizes.
16. “Does acupuncture help with perimenopause?”
Yes. Hot flashes, mood swings, joint pain, brain fog, suddenly crying in the Walmart parking lot—your hormones are shifting, not betraying you. Acupuncture helps regulate the transitions.
17. “Is acupuncture covered by insurance in New Brunswick?”
Many plans have coverage, especially teacher and government plans. It’s worth a quick check before you book.
The real truth?
Women aren’t looking for miracle cures. We’re looking for someone to listen, someone to see the bigger picture, someone to help our bodies feel like home again. Acupuncture is one of the few places where your stress, your sleep, your hormones, your digestion, your aches, and your emotional wellbeing are all part of the same conversation.

A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together. You can always find me over on Instagram to keep the conversation going.
