There’s this idea floating around (probably invented by a man who never had to remember both the clinic protocols and which kid needs a Secret Santa gift) that women can “multitask.”
But honestly? Most days it feels less like multitasking and more like trying to play piano with oven mitts on.
The truth is, your nervous system doesn’t actually want to juggle twelve open tabs in your brain.
Not the student brain in Halifax trying to memorize point functions with the sound of snowplows in the background.
Not the office brain in Carleton County answering emails while mentally planning supper and wondering if you remembered to switch the laundry.
In TCM, scattered attention is often a sign that the Heart and Spleen are getting a little overtaxed. Too much thinking. Too much rushing. Too much “should.”
So try this tiny act of rebellion today:
Do one thing at a time.
Pour your tea and just… drink it.
Finish the email you are writing before checking the notification that just went off on your phone.
Fold the towels without also checking tracking numbers like the package will move faster if you stare at it
Your body will thank you. Your mind will soften. Your Spleen will finally get a minute to breathe.
And honestly? You deserve that kind of quiet focus.
A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together. You can always find me over on Instagram to keep the conversation going.
