Every now and then I hear from women who are booking their first session and quietly wondering if there’s something they should fix or prepare before they walk in.
So let’s clear this up once and for all.
Here is the official list of things you should absolutely, definitely worry about before your acupuncture appointment:
1. Whether your breath is perfect.
Nope. Not this.
Your breath is part of your digestive story. I’m not judging it. I’m listening to it.
2. Whether your tongue looks “weird.”
Still no.
If it’s pale, red, cracked, coated, scalloped — wonderful. That’s information. It’s supposed to look like something. Tongues are diagnostic poetry.
3. Whether you’re on your period.
Not this either.
Your cycle gives me some of my best clues about your health, and acupuncture works beautifully when you’re bleeding.
4. Whether you shaved your legs.
Absolutely not.
Hairy, smooth, stubbly, forgotten, I do not care. I’m palpating channels, not taking you to prom.
5. Whether your feet smell like… well… feet.
Nope again.
Feet are real. Life is real. I’m not here to evaluate your foot freshness. I’m here to check Kidney, Spleen, and Liver channels.
6. Whether your belly is bloated, soft, scarred, or imperfect.
Not required.
Every abdomen has a story, and none of them are embarrassing. Honestly, bellies are my favourite teachers.
7. Whether your emotions are “too much.”
Still no.
If you’re anxious, tender, exhausted, or two seconds away from crying… welcome. Emotional release is a feature, not a flaw.
8. Whether your poop updates are TMI.
Absolutely not.
Your bowels are one of TCM’s best diagnostic tools. Never hold back. I want the whole weather report.
9. Whether you’ll fall asleep, snore, or accidentally fart.
Listen.
If you relax enough for your body to do body things, that means the treatment is working. I promise I’m not keeping score.
So… what should you worry about?
Only one thing:
Worry itself.
Worry knots the Spleen, scatters the mind, drains your energy, and tangles up your digestion and hormones.
It is the actual imbalance I help women unwind all day in clinic.
So before your appointment, the thing to worry about is…
…nothing.
Show up as you are.
Unbrushed tongue, cozy socks, period cramps, hairy legs, busy mind, tender emotions — all of it.
You bring your real body.
I’ll bring the needles, the knowledge, and the grounding.
And together, we’ll untangle the worry itself.
A Gentle Note: I’m a student of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and this space reflects my learning as it unfolds. TCM is deep, layered, and complex, and I’m still finding my footing within it. I will refine my understanding over time. I will make mistakes. That’s part of doing this honestly. What I share here is my current perspective, shaped by my teachers, clinical training, lived experience, and my own biases. It’s not absolute, it’s evolving. I welcome thoughtful conversation, shared insight, and respectful correction along the way. I humbly welcome your insight. Let’s learn together.
